How
do I get started?
This
could not be simpler, go to the 'where' & 'diary' pages you will find the details of walks nearest to you. Then simply
turn up, you will be made welcome by the Leaders and the others who
are walking.
But,
What
if there are no walks near to you?
There
are a number of alternatives:
1. If you think that there is a call for walks in your
area what about becoming a Health Walk Leader yourself? If you are interested
please contact the Health Walk Manager via the contact page who will
help with training and setting up the walk in your area.
2.
You could try independent walking, start by doing such simple things
as walking to the local shops / post office / doctors or walk the children
to school, instead of driving. Or walk along the road you live in. Then
start to extend your activity by walking in a near by park or go further
around your neighbourhood. Try and be more adventurous, follow a way-marked
walk route these can be found at libraries, tourist information centres
or the lets go website www.letsgo.org.uk.
If you are concerned about walking alone ask family and friends or even
a neighbour, you may be surprised as they may want to walk and have
been wondering how to go about it.
3. Try and travel to one of the walks, if this is difficult
contact the Health Walk Manager who my be able to advise you where to
go for the help with transport, please note transport is very much dependent
upon the area in which you live, but try anyway.
4. Other organisations also have regular walks, while
they are not specifically Health Walks they are still a good way of
becoming more active, try:
• U3A, the University of the Third Age
• Ramblers Association
• P3, (Parish Paths Partnership) groups
• Nature Walks, such as those run at Millennium Park, The Forest
of Marstonvale
Our main message is if you are thinking about going
for a walk:
‘Don’t give up, if there is not a Health Walk near to you
try an alternative or contact the Health Walk Manager’
